Shop Hand / Lined Tubing Inspector

Position Summary
The Shop Hand / Lined Tubing Inspector supports safe and efficient shop, yard, and field operations by receiving, unloading, handling, cleaning, inspecting, documenting, preparing, and loading lined production tubing used in oil and gas wells. The position identifies visible tubing damage, liner or coating defects, corrosion, thread damage, contamination, and other conditions that may affect tubing integrity or serviceability. The employee also performs general shop duties, maintains accurate inspection and traceability records, operates authorized material-handling equipment, and assists with shop safety inspections, emergency-equipment checks, and minimum HSE requirements in accordance with company procedures, customer specifications, and applicable safety requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Receive, count, identify, sort, rack, and stage lined tubing and related materials by size, grade, connection, customer, job, condition, or work order.
  • Safely load, unload, move, and position tubing using forklifts, pipe-handling equipment, slings, racks, and other approved tools.
  • Load and unload tubing deliveries as needed, verify the delivered or shipped material against available paperwork, and report shortages, damage, or discrepancies to supervision.
  • Clean tubing as required to remove dirt, scale, hydrocarbons, thread compound, and other material that may interfere with inspection.
  • Perform visual and dimensional inspections in accordance with company procedures, customer specifications, work instructions, and applicable acceptance criteria.
  • Inspect tubing bodies, ends, couplings, threads, protectors, and accessible lined surfaces for damage or abnormal conditions.
  • Measure and verify required dimensions using approved gauges, measuring tools, and inspection equipment.
  • Segregate conforming, repairable, and rejected tubing; clearly mark status and prevent unauthorized use of nonconforming material.
  • Complete inspection reports, tally sheets, traceability records, rejection documentation, equipment checks, and other required records accurately and legibly.
  • Immediately report questionable conditions, recurring defects, equipment problems, spills, incidents, and safety hazards to supervision.
  • Maintain tubing racks, inspection areas, tools, and shop equipment in a clean, orderly, and serviceable condition.
  • Support routine shop and yard HSE activities, including safety inspections, fire-extinguisher checks, first-aid kit checks, required postings, recordkeeping, and corrective-action follow-up.
  • Perform general shop duties, including housekeeping, material organization, minor equipment care, inventory support, and preparation of shipments.
  • Assist with field inspections, job mobilization, and other operational assignments when qualified and directed.
Lined Tubing Inspection Responsibilities
  • Verify tubing identification and traceability before inspection, including available size, grade, connection, length, serial or tracking information, and customer/job designation.
  • Inspect accessible internal liner or coating surfaces for cuts, gouges, cracks, blisters, peeling, separation, swelling, wrinkles, exposed base metal, impact damage, wear, contamination, or other discontinuities.
  • Inspect tubing outside diameter for corrosion, pitting, dents, bends, crushing, wear, washout, mechanical damage, or other visible conditions.
  • Check tubing ends, pin and box connections, threads, couplings, seals, and thread protectors for cleanliness, damage, corrosion, deformation, and proper fit.
  • Use approved lighting, mirrors, borescopes, gauges, drifts, or other inspection devices only when trained and authorized.
  • Apply documented acceptance and rejection criteria consistently; do not guess, alter results, or approve material outside assigned authority.
  • Tag, stencil, color-code, quarantine, or otherwise identify tubing status in accordance with company and customer requirements.
  • Protect lined surfaces from sharp tools, dragging, impact, improper supports, excessive heat, incompatible chemicals, and contamination during handling and storage.
  • Maintain calibration or verification status of inspection tools and remove damaged, expired, or out-of-tolerance equipment from service.
Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
  • Follow company HSE policies, job safety analyses, work instructions, customer requirements, and supervisor direction.
  • Use required personal protective equipment, which may include safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, safety-toe footwear, hearing protection, face shield, and task-specific protective equipment.
  • Inspect tools and equipment before use and operate only equipment for which training and authorization have been provided.
  • Use proper lifting techniques and mechanical assistance when handling heavy or awkward materials.
  • Remain clear of suspended loads, pinch points, line-of-fire hazards, moving equipment, and unsecured tubulars.
  • Exercise stop-work authority when an unsafe condition or act is observed and promptly notify supervision.
  • Follow spill-prevention, waste-handling, housekeeping, and environmental requirements.
  • Assist with scheduled shop and yard safety inspections, document identified hazards or deficiencies, and promptly report findings to supervision or HSE personnel.
  • Perform and document assigned visual checks of fire extinguishers to confirm they are accessible, properly mounted, clearly identified, undamaged, and within the required inspection period; report deficiencies and do not perform service or maintenance unless qualified and authorized.
  • Inspect and restock first-aid kits and related emergency supplies as assigned, verify supplies are accessible and within expiration dates, and report missing, damaged, or expired items.
  • Assist supervision and HSE personnel with maintaining minimum HSE requirements, including required postings, inspection records, safety equipment checks, housekeeping standards, corrective-action follow-up, and readiness for company or customer inspections.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, inspections, incident reporting, and corrective actions.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and safe use of hand tools and inspection equipment.
  • Understanding of material segregation, identification, traceability, and nonconforming product control.
  • Basic knowledge of shop inspection practices, emergency-equipment checks, HSE documentation, and escalation of identified deficiencies.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and maintain quality while working in a production-oriented environment.
  • Sound judgment to stop work and request direction when requirements or material condition are unclear.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, grip, push, pull, and perform repetitive hand movements.
